Only Men Aloud Poster

Only Men Aloud was formed in 2000, with the aim of injecting new blood into the Welsh choir tradition. September 2013 saw a complete reinvention of the group, as the choir became a honed and toned vocal ensemble.
The men bring both a new sound and a more varied and eclectic repertoire to the mix, from Welsh folksongs and hymns to music theatre and opera, barbershop and swing to pop.
Following their shake-up, the Classical Brit Award winners who came to prominence as BBC One’s Last Choir Standing have embarked on many extensive tours, all around the world. They now have worldwide record sales of over 300,000.
Over the years, the hugely popular group has built up a strong fan base across the country and were honoured to be asked to sing in the London 2012 Opening Ceremony at the very moment the Olympic Flame was lit.
OMA have given many memorable performances, with numerous appearances at outdoor festivals and proms. In 2014, they undertook a highly successful tour of the USA including performances at Chicago’s Ravinia Festival and the North American Festival of Wales in Minneapolis.
OMA have now recorded five studio albums and plans are afoot for a sixth, later this year. They continue their busy touring and concert schedule, right across the UK and beyond.

More details on the starring acts can be found on their websites: Douglas Town Band (www.douglastownband.org.im) and Only Men Aloud (www.onlymenaloud.com).

Lights, Camera, Action!

Wow! What an amazing evening of entertainment!

The show started with a blast with StarWars and our very own Darth Vader (Ken Mitchell) who marched in and conducted the band with his lightsaber.

It was a great way to start the concert and as Obi-Wan Kenobi once said “In my experience there is no such thing as luck.”.

We then went onto Bring Him Home a soprano cornet solo played by our soprano player Carol Devereau. This is a beautiful piece and played superbly last night.

Then the Phantom arrived (Jack Divers) with his mask and cloak and could be seen in the shadows of the church, and as the band moved from the Overture into Think of Me, he could be heard and seen cackling from the balcony.

Following this great opener from the band we then had 3 songs performed by Matt Creer and Josephine Evans on Cello. This was a great duo and an insight into his new album coming soon!

Then we returned to the band for A Disney Fantasy, and the finally of the first half was Pirates of the Caribbean – where our very own pirates James Devereau and Reece Lally fought in the aisle.

There were cakes and treats that had been made by supporters of the band for the interval and these were well received by the audience! Thank you to everyone who helped with the refreshments!

The second half then kicked off with Come Follow the Band a feature for our Bass Section. We also had our very own circus acts, clown (Jack Divers) and acrobats (Ihona Bridges (from DTB Youth Band) and Daisy Divers)

The we heard the amazing Anagh Coar School Choir, they sang the Circle of Life from the Lion King and Help by the Beatles. It was spine tingling good and if you want to see more from them they are performing tomorrow with Aled Jones – https://www.villagaiety.com/highlighted-show-pages/aled-jones/

The band then continued with the famous piece There’s No Business Like Show Business.

Matt then took the stage for his second spot and finished with a breathtaking version of Gethsemane Jesus Christ Superstar!

The band then played Hymn to the fallen with the two Buglers Robert Mitchell and Rebecca Bailey playing at the back of the hall.

The finale of the evening was Eve of War from War of the Worlds – Chris Maybury introduced this with the credits from the film.

The band had an encore up there sleeve which was All the Jazz from Chicago! A great way to finish a truly spectacular concert!
